Keys For Great Visits With Family and Friends With Your Baby

Okay, now that we’ve survived the flight (yay us!), let’s talk about what happens when you arrive. Ah, family visits. The excitement! The joy! The reality check that your baby *still* needs naps and you can’t attend every BBQ or dinner gathering like you used to. I’m a social butterfly, so the thought of missing out on the fun can be hard to swallow. But guess what? That little bundle of joy? They can’t “vacation” like we do. They still need their sleep.

The first time I learned this lesson, I let my baby nap "whenever and wherever" and—surprise!—it led to a meltdown and a very grumpy evening. Whoops. Here’s the truth: **Sleep is non-negotiable** for babies. Keep a regular nap and bedtime routine and you’ll have a much happier baby. And if baby’s happy, mama’s happy.

### Here’s How You Make It Work

1. **Talk to your host** Have a chat with the family member or friend hosting you about your baby’s nap schedule. Most people will want to help, but they might not realize how much sleep babies actually need. If they know your little one needs quiet time, they can schedule around it.

2. **Create quiet time for baby**

Everyone wants to love on your baby, but too much attention can lead to overstimulation. Make sure they have a calm space to retreat to during the day. It doesn’t have to be fancy—a quiet room or corner with toys will do.

3. **Naps > FOMO**

Look, I get it. You don’t want to miss out on all the fun. But if you want your baby to be happy and engaged, they need their rest. So stick to the schedule. If you’ve set aside nap time for the baby, *take it*. That’s when the grown-ups can relax and enjoy meaningful conversations (without little hands grabbing your wine glass every 10 minutes).

4. **Communicate your needs**

Don’t be afraid to speak up! If your baby needs a little space to calm down or needs help going to sleep, let the others know. You’re advocating for your little one’s well-being, and that’s your job.

Remember, when you can keep your child’s routine as consistent as possible, they’ll have the energy to thrive and engage in all the fun, while you get some well-deserved time to relax, too.

### Make It Work For Everyone

The secret to a successful trip? Balance. Find that sweet spot between naps, playtime, and adult conversation. This way, everyone wins—baby gets their sleep, you get some peace, and you’re able to enjoy the moments without losing your mind.
